A few weeks ago on a cold winter morning we pulled into the Pretoria train station to see a thick black cloud billowing out of a beautiful old steam train that looks as shiny and new as it did way back when. The team have restored this train to its former glory equipped with green leather seats, copper finishes and wooden window frames. The tin coffee container filled with hot comforting liquid to fuel the bodies of the men shoveling in the coal, all in all a blast into history. In celebration of my father in laws 60th my sister in law spoilt the family by taking us all on a ride to Cullinan.
The repetitive noise of the wheels on the railway track, soot in your eyes if you stick your head out the window, the black plume of smoke dissolving outside the window along with the giggles of the children being on the train made for an unforgettable 2 and a half hour journey to Cullinan.
Cullinan is a quaint old town that has amazing history but is keeping up with the times with beautiful coffee shops and boutique stores. We went to the Cockpit Brewery where we all enjoyed a scrumptious lunch and a bit of beer tasting. In the afternoon we all sluggishly climbed back onto the train – the giggles dulled and the incessant chatter silenced as everyone relaxed with full tummy’s from lunch and happiness from spending time together with family. My favourite part of the whole day was waving at the children who would run from their houses to stand on little mounds of sand to see the train come past while waving furiously. The joy in their eyes was priceless.
If you want an outing for the day – take your family on this part of history, you wont regret it. Thank you for an amazing adventure and special outing.
